How to Check a Moving Company’s License Number

As a moving company, we get many questions from customers asking if we are licensed and insured. We are; however, it is worrisome that many people take our word for it and don’t do their own research. The most important thing to find out is the company’s license number, which should be displayed on their website. The license number is provided by the PUC (Public Utility Commission).

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission states that: “The Motor Carrier Division regulates household movers that operate within the state.  These movers are required to have a Certificate of Public Convenience issued by the PUC and must have the proper insurance on file.”

What is PUC?

“The CPUC regulates privately owned electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, railroad, rail transit, and passenger transportation companies.  The CPUC serves the public interest by protecting consumers and ensuring the provision of safe, reliable utility service and infrastructure at reasonable rates, with a commitment to environmental enhancement and a healthy California economy.  We regulate utility services, stimulate innovation, and promote competitive markets, where possible.  On this website you’ll find information about the many initiatives underway at the CPUC,” according to California PUC.

How can I verify a moving company on PUC?

Once you visit your state’s PUC website, click on the transportation tab and then look up moving companies. Searching for a moving company is easy: you simply enter the company’s name or their PUC number from their website. Once the company is found, all the vital information will be listed on the site, such as the owner’s name, the address, and all the insurance information.

It is very important to research the company you choose to transport your belongings. Take your time and be sure that the one you chose is licensed and insured for your own peace of mind.
